School Says - General Information
Adelphi University has a rich history, an exciting present, and a limitless future. Founded in 1896, Adelphi University is Long Island's oldest private coeducational institution of higher learning. As Adelphi grows, our academic programs evolve to reflect the needs and interests of our close to 8,500 students from 41 states and 63 foreign countries. Recent program additions include a B.F.A. in studio art for aspiring visual arts professionals, as well as new and updated bachelor's programs in criminal justice administration, computer management and information sciences, and school psychology. The university has recently made significant investments in its 75-acre Garden City campus, including an extensive new performing arts, recreation, and sports complex, which opened in fall 2008. Adelphi opened an 18,000-square-foot fine arts building in 2006 and a new residence hall in 2003. Our student-athletes compete in 21 Division I and II intercollegiate sports as well as in an array of intramural activities. Students also benefit from Long IslandÂ's many resources, and are a 40-minute train ride from New York City. Through its schools and programs-the College of Arts and Sciences, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, the Honors College, the Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, University College, and the Schools of Business, Nursing, and Social Work-Adelphi offers more than 100 career-advancing undergraduate and graduate programs of study at our main Garden City campus and at off-campus locations in Hauppauge, Manhattan, and Poughkeepsie.

Students Say - Academics
This "relatively small school" in Garden City, New York offers an impressively wide range of programs and majors (such as an Honors College, School of Business, and School of Nursing), as well as "generous" financial aid. Though most students commute to campus, the school tries hard to create a "beautiful environment that cultivates leadership and growth" and encourages "close-knit attention to students." The small campus makes transport between buildings easy, and the facilities are always being improved. "I know that when I step on campus and walk through the beautiful grounds that my mood will lift. The positive atmosphere is really great," says one content student. The administration is "great and very accessible" and has designed an educational system that rewards the students who take advantage of opportunities by letting them "help shape the University setting and create their own overall experiences." In other words, "Get involved and study hard, and you'll love this campus!!!"
Those who do study here speak highly of their professors, for the most part; the majority of students find their professors to be "incredibly accommodating and enthusiastic," though some think "there are a few teachers [who] should retire and let someone else who can remember the subject teach." Overall, most feel their professors are "good instructors providing students with useful knowledge preparing them for their careers." A few students complain that there are "too many general education requirements," but once these are completed, the academic ball really gets rolling. The class registration system and financial aid offices are also cited as needing some work, but Adelphi's "small classes get you more one-on-one time with the teachers."
Students Say - Campus Life
Since Adelphi is mainly attended by commuters, the place is "a ghost town on the weekends;" however, some students do live in dorms, and fraternities and sororities do exist. "I find campus life OK. It's not its extremely fun, but it's not totally boring," says one junior. The classic dorm room hangout is popular among residents, and the school does provide shuttles to Target, the nearby mall, train stations, and other places, not to mention the ease with which one can get to New York City via the train. Recently, there has been a push to increase school spirit and activity, and "it has been working." During the week, the dry campus offers tons of organizations and clubs, recreational facilities, and campus activities such as "parties, battle of the bands, comedy shows, theatrical shows, and constant commotion (good commotion) in the University Center." "Getting jobs on campus is a little difficult" for those looking to work near their classes.
