Students Say - Academics
Albright College's motto is "A different way of thinking," and students tell us that it's not just an empty slogan. Rather, this principle "is truly evident, in a positive way, in all aspects" of an Albright education "including the academic options, clubs and organizations, campus living, and social aspects." Interdisciplinary study is central to Albright's academic philosophy; one junior majoring in sociology tells us that "I have been able to relate theater and sociology within the same semester, which is something I could have never pictured before." Students thrive or fail here to the extent that they can embrace the Albright approach. Those who love it appreciate "the interdisciplinary nature of each class" and insist that "if you come to Albright and come to believe in Albright's principles, you will have the opportunity to exceed any imaginable expectations in social life, academics, athletics, and any other endeavor that you wish to be a part of." Those who don't may conclude that "Albright costs at least twice what a state school does and doesn't offer anything more than you would find at a state school," although to do so they'd have to ignore the "small classes where you can feel comfortable answering or asking questions." Most classes are "discussion-rather than lecture-based, which makes for a much better learning environment!" Albright also boasts "great facilities. The new gym, the Shumo Center, is state of the art, and now Albright is making renovations on other buildings that will make the campus even better."
Students Say - Campus Life
Life at Albright "is relaxing and fun," with students focused on schoolwork during the week and on the "plenty of things to do on and around campus" on the weekends. This includes "'experience events' that the school sets up," which can be "anything from comedians to educational lectures to plays. You have to attend sixteen experience events by the end of your sophomore year." Other options include "Greek life (date parties, formals, philanthropic activities), athletics, shopping (mall, outlets, King of Prussia, which is about 60 minutes from campus), reading Phillies and Royals games" and taking advantage of "sports recreation facilities nearby (rock climbing, laser tag, water parks, mini golf)." Also, "The college actually plans trips to locations that are further than we want to drive, like New York City. There are always things going on in Philadelphia, and if you want to go, you can find others who want to, too." Despite all these options, "there is quite a bit of alcohol on campus, although there's plenty to do for those who don't want to drink." While some city folks may find life here a bit to slow, many here believe that "you will not be bored unless you allow yourself to be."
Students Say - Student Body
Albright's academic approach attracts students who "value being unique and following your own path. We are able to fit together, because we respect and reward individuality." Most are "very involved and full of school spirit," and "everyone is very open and friendly," but "there are still many cliques." These include "the Greeks, the artists, the jocks and cheerleaders, the 'gangstas,' the Asians, and the shy folk. The cliques are most apparent in the cafeteria, however outside of the dining hall all the groups do mesh and interact." Undergrads here tend to be "either really career-minded or really socially-minded." Socially-minded men take note: "Females outnumber males" by a substantial margin.
