School Says - General Information
Cottey College, a two-year, independent, liberal arts college, educates women to be contributing members of a global society through a challenging curriculum and a dynamic campus experience. In our diverse and supportive environment, women develop their potential for personal and professional lives of intellectual engagement and thoughtful action as learners, leaders, and citizens. Cottey was founded in 1884 by Virginia Alice Cottey who believed that women deserved the same educational opportunities as men. Virginia Alice and her sisters pooled their $3,000 life savings to establish their school. On September 8, 1884, Vernon Seminary, as it was called then, opened with 28 students in a two-story red brick schoolhouse. Virginia Alice was intimately invested in the success of her school. Because of her personal interest and involvement, the locals refused to call the school Vernon Seminary. It was the Â"Cottey sistersÂ' school,Â" or Cottey College. In 1887, the school was chartered by the State of Missouri as Cottey College and produced its first collegiate graduate, Olive Gatewood. When Virginia Alice joined the P.E.O. Sisterhood in 1926, she realized how similar the goals of the two organizations were. In 1927, she gave her college to the Sisterhood, which made it the only nonsectarian college owned and supported by women. The P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic education organization of almost 250,000 members, is dedicated to providing excellent educational opportunities for women. Today CotteyÂ's campus comprises 14 buildings on 11 city blocks and a 33-acre wooded recreation area with a lodge. The residential student capacity of 350 students typically represents 40 states and 10-14 international countries annually. The campus and the times may have changed, but the principles of a Cottey education have not. Cottey still emphasizes high academic standards with unique opportunities for personal growth through residential, cultural, and intellectual experiences.

Sisterhood, a philanthropic educational organization dedicated solely to furthering education for women. A Cottey degree is a smart investment! We offer a comprehensive program of financial assistance options, including scholarships, grants, student employment, and loans. More than $4.5 million in financial aid was awarded to our students in 2007-08. Typically, 97% of Cottey students receive some kind of financial aid. The average financial aid package for the 2007-08 academic year was almost $14,800. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) 1. I probably don't qualify for aid. Should I apply anyway? Yes! All students should apply for financial aid even if they think they probably won't be eligible. Not all types of financial aid are based on need. 2. When should I complete the FAFSA? Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov. [Cottey's priority deadline for completing the FAFSA is March 1.] 3. What happens after I file the FAFSA? You'll get either a paper Student Aid Report (SAR) or an e-mail with a link to your SAR on the Web. If you listed Cottey's federal school code (002458), the financial aid office will receive an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) which will be used to determine your eligibility for aid. Once we have determined your eligibility for aid we will send a financial aid award letter to you. 4. What types of financial aid are available? There are grants, scholarships, student employment, and student loans. A financial aid package may consist of a combination of all of these sources. 5. How do I apply for a P.E.O. scholarship? When you are accepted for admission we will notify your state P.E.O. scholarship chair. She will contact you and advise you of the procedure to follow to be considered for a scholarship. Be sure to apply for admission before December of your senior year in high school. State P.E.O. scholarships have application deadlines ranging from January 15 - April 1. 6. If my family has special financial circumstances, what should I do? You may appeal for reevaluation of your financial aid eligibility because of changes in your family's financial situation. Examples of special circumstances might include loss of employment, disability, loss of untaxed income, death of a parent, or unusually high medical expenses. Call the financial aid office and request a Special Condition form.
