Podcasting gives you instant authority and celebrity as well as access to authority and celebrity. Having influential guests on your podcast can do so many things for you. It can open doors to others apart from those who didn't take you seriously before, and it can help you build relationships with those powerful influencers on your show. But many people struggle with exactly how they get a mega influencer on their podcast. Here are 4 proven tips on how to land an influencer on your podcast.

But before we start inviting people with influence, we need to have the right mindset. You must position yourself as a podcast host rather than just someone who will go live on social media. The key is positioning yourself as someone in authority with an audience they want to speak to. Another mindset to have is knowing that your podcast is worthy of whoever is a star in your eyes. No one is better than you, and no one is beneath you. Another mindset tip is that it's not about you - it's about them; when approaching them to be on your show, don't talk about yourself or how awesome your show is but instead focus on what's in it for them. Also, when inviting these people you admire, it's critical not to be a fangirl or fanboy; remember, you're a podcaster.

And if you haven't launched your podcast yet, don't say, "I'm about to launch a podcast." Go ahead and become it by saying, "I'm a podcast host." Don't let words create doubt in their mind about how serious you are as a podcaster.

One of my favorite mottos is "If you don't A-S-K, you don't G-E-T," and that's exactly what we need to have as a motto when inviting these people to your show.

Tip #1: Leverage other people's influence and power

When you don't have trust built in your brand, you can borrow it. I like to leverage my A-lister list. I make a list of about 15 to 20 influencers that I know (and who know me), and I rate them to see who would endorse me. Ask those who are highly rated to be on your show, and make sure you start making deposits into that relationship accounts of those who have a low rating. Once you start having these influential people on your show, you'll want to leverage these interviews. When others see powerful people on your show, this is a fantastic way to gain trust quickly.

Tip #2: Find something that they want to promote

To get people on your show, you must understand what they stand to gain. Maybe they have a new book coming out, a big event coming up, or a charity they are passionate about. Start looking for ways to incentivize them to be on your show. Make sure to highlight and praise them for this and tie back to why you want them on your show. Use your show as a platform for them to promote themselves. The framework consists of strategically networking on social media, tastefully asking and having a dash of assumptive closing. Compliment them on something specific. Don't say "I like your work"; instead, say, "I resonated with chapter two of your book." Build rapport with them by keeping engaged with them. You can do this by simply sharing their stories and tagging them. Another example is to take a picture of their book and tag them in it. Start commenting on their posts and recommend them and their services to friends by tagging them in the comments.

Tip #3: Get into their circle

The easiest way to get into a circle is by already knowing someone in there. Look for someone who can get you access to that circle or who has access to it. Start creating a friendship, and once you start building that trust with them, others in their circle will start trusting you as well.

Tip #4: Know the gatekeeper

Many celebrities and influencers have some sort of gatekeeper. It could be an assistant or a social media manager; in any case, find out who their gatekeeper is. The gatekeeper has the authority to shut you down permanently. But it is necessary to treat them with kindness and respect.

Once you're in with the gatekeeper, consider yourself one step closer to landing your dream podcast. You will want to connect with them by maybe sending them a thank-you gift or amplifying them in some way that helps you build that relationship authentically.

Closing thoughts

Podcasting is one of the most powerful ways to get your content, message or business out there. It's one of the best ways to build relationships with others outside of your community, so getting the right guests on your show is critical. By adding guest influencers to your show, you've established yourself as someone with influence.

These four tips have helped me land major stars such as international rock stars, international best-selling authors, industry thought leaders and social influencers. These are 4 proven tips that, when implemented, the sky's the limit when it comes to getting guests on your podcast.

Your homework from reading this is to create your dream list 100. Start implementing these four tips to turn your dream list into your podcast guest list.
