Periyar E. V. Ramasamy

Born over 140 years ago, the social activist still holds a great place in the hearts of Tamil Nadu residents. Not as a politician but Thanthai Periyar rose as an ideology of self-respect. Known as the "Father of modern Tamil Nadu', he spearheaded Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam.

The social reformer had envisioned a Dravida homeland that was void of Brahminical dominance, caste prevalence and women oppression. His strong approach against Congress conservatism not only earned him ample of respect by the Tamils but also the great amount of appreciation among the masses all around the nation.

M. F. Husain

"India's very own Picasso' was what Maqbool Fida Husain aka M.F. Husain was referred as. Born in the nation of diverse cultures and artistic history, this Indore-based was able to establish a special place for himself in the hearts of the world art lovers with his distinctive artistry.

His freehand drawings splattered with vibrant colours depicting the richness of Indian subject matter in contemporary style earned him great fame but it was his symbolic iconography with historic figures he created by interweaving religious aspects that aspired many youngsters to become an artist.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Indian cricketers enjoy a massive fan following not just in India but throughout the world and Ravichandran Ashwin is no different. The all-rounder has smashed multiple records in his 9 years of career in International cricket including earning the tag of fastest Indian bowler.

As the cricketer turned 32, wishes started pouring from all around on social media as his well-wishers remembered the most memorable stints of his career. The off-spinner has played 62 Tests and 111 One Day Internationals and picked up 327 and 150 wickets respectively.

Anant Pai

The millennials might be unaware of his existence but "Uncle Pai' was the pioneer of Indian comics. Creator of India's two most famous comic books, Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle, the renowned comic book creator was an illustrious storyteller.

A Journalist by profession, Pai was instrumental in making Greek mythology an important part of young kids' comics by adding child-friendly narratives of Indian epics to the stories. Unknowingly, he became the hero for several generations of Indian children.
