Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt Ltd facility in Sanand (Gujarat) describing it as a major step in strengthening India's role in the global semiconductor industry.
The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Sanjay Mehrotra, and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, among other dignitaries.
Calling the launch a historic milestone, the Prime Minister said the start of commercial production at the Assembly, Test, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facility will deepen India's integration into the global technology value chain. "India, known for software, is now strengthening its identity in the field of hardware as well," he said, adding that the Sanand plant signals "the rise of a new future."
He noted that discussions around chips and data were limited in India a decade ago but the country is now emerging as a semiconductor hub. "India is very rapidly becoming a part of the global semiconductor value chain," he said, congratulating Micron and the Gujarat government for the achievement.
Highlighting the speed of execution, the Prime Minister pointed out that the memorandum of understanding was signed in June 2023, groundbreaking followed in September 2023, pilot installation began in February 2024, and commercial production commenced in February 2026. He described the facility as an example of India's shift "from policy to production."
He also emphasised the importance of India–US cooperation in emerging technologies. "The partnership between India and America is very important, especially in fields of technology like AI and chips," he said, noting that joint efforts will strengthen supply chains and critical minerals security.
Describing semiconductors as central to the future economy, he remarked, "If the regulator of the last century was oil, then the regulator of this century is going to be the micro-chip." He added that India launched its Semiconductor Mission during the Covid pandemic, and the initiative is now delivering results.
According to the Prime Minister, 10 projects have been approved under the Semicon India programme, with additional facilities coming up in Dholera, Noida, Assam, Odisha, and Punjab. He stressed that the semiconductor ecosystem includes research, logistics, skilled labour, and component manufacturing.
The Sanand plant will produce memory and storage solutions used in data centres, AI applications, mobile devices, and advanced computing systems. It is expected to generate employment and support future expansion. "This is opening a new gate of opportunities for the youth of India," he said.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reassured global investors: "India is ready. India is reliable and India delivers."
