Nous Jewelry Founder Christina Noussis On Building An Empowering Brand Founder Christina Noussis shares how she launched Nous, a luxury jewelry and accessories brand.
You're reading Entrepreneur Middle East, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.
Christina Noussis, a Canadian who has lived in Dubai since 2003, spent 15 years climbing up the ladder in the city's thriving events industry, creating bespoke, high profile events for a multitude of corporate clients across all industries, including automotive, real estate, and oil and gas. In 2016, however, she decided to switch gears and delve into the world of e-commerce. Nous, a luxury jewelry and accessories brand, was created out of her home in Dubai.
"I always had an ambitious desire to eventually create and develop my own brand and company," Noussis says. "I was also raised by a family of entrepreneurs– both my parents owned and ran their own business, which inspired me to pursue my own dreams as an entrepreneur when the time was right. Furthermore, and like most women, I've always had an affection for jewelry and accessories. Collecting one-of-a-kind statement pieces of jewelry has always been a hobby of mine. As a means of expressing myself, my choice in what I wore always brought me compliments on my style and individuality. Hence, when I thought about owning a business, jewelry is what came to mind. I'd reached a stage in life where I wanted to do something other than events- something which would stir my creativity and challenge me. It was during a trip to Vietnam in 2016 when I was inspired and motivated to go ahead with my idea of starting my own jewelry business. I wanted to share my curations with the world."
While she had no background in the jewelry industry or in e-commerce, but fuelled by her passion, Noussis launched her brand in May 2018, and has featured three collections to date: The Bian Collection, The Stained Collection, and The Silversmith Collection, all of which take in influences from local cultures.
It was through her many travels around the world that Noussis realized that many local craftsmen do not have the opportunity to showcase their crafts internationally, which inspired the mission of her brand.
She adds that storytelling is the heartbeat of the Nous brand. "Through travel, we share personal cultural experiences we have from around the world, and then share these experiences through our carefully curated pieces," she explains. "All of products are handcrafted and produced as exclusive pieces; rarely will you find two pieces alike. Nous is all about the curation, the experience, the story and creating a journey for the buyer."
The Nous products are showcased online on its website, while the next phase of growth will include participating in various pop-up shops and local markets around the UAE. Going forward, Noussis sees the company expanding to a lifestyle concept store, offering not just jewelry, but also homeware, statement accessories, and lifestyle products. "We want to share more of what this world has to offer and celebrate the talents behind them."
Nous founder Christina Noussis' tips for entrepreneurs
1. Do your research. Take your time to understand and study your product, potential customers, markets and competitors. Work on expanding your knowledge base so you know what you're getting into and what ideas are likely to work. You can never learn too much about one thing.
2. Tap into your network. Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for an opinion from people you know. You'd be surprised at how much valuable information lies amongst your circle or from a friend of a friend who knows someone. Reach out to your social network.
3. Learn from your experiences– good or bad. It's okay to make mistakes because it's all part of the process. Have faith in your capabilities and vision and accept that some things will happen for a reason; whether it's to learn something, to grow and develop or become better at what you do. Keep your eyes and ears open and keep adapting!
