What BambooHR’s Deal With Smarthveer Sidana’s HireQuotient Says About HR Tech’s Frontline Gap
The company’s partnership with HireQuotient highlights a growing shift in HR technology, as employers turn to AI-powered sourcing and recruiting automation to address persistent hiring challenges across the frontline workforce.
Over the past decade, human resource (HR) software has been rebuilt around what happens after hire, everything from cloud payroll to mobile scheduling. However, HR software for frontline workers—often “deskless” employees in industries such as healthcare, retail, hospitality, manufacturing, etc.—changed far less, and for many hourly employers it’s still a mix of job boards, spreadsheets, and a recruiter working the phone.
The lack of adequate HR tools for this particular segment of the workforce is referred to as the “frontline gap.” Aptitude Research’s State of Hiring Automation 2026 report gave post-application hiring an average automation score of 21%. Drawing on a survey of more than 300 organizations, it found 94% of organizations don’t schedule interviews inline, and frontline hiring fared no better than knowledge work.
That gap affects a large group of workers. The Josh Bersin Company and UKG put frontline employees at about 70% of the U.S. workforce. On September 23, BambooHR brought HireQuotient into its partner ecosystem, connecting HireQuotient’s EasySource sourcing platform to BambooHR’s applicant tracking and payroll software.
The front door HR tech never rebuilt
iCIMS’s 2025 State of Frontline Hiring Report found that 91% of frontline hiring managers report urgency in filling roles, yet 60% of hourly workers have started an application and never finished it, half of them because the form was too long. Replacement demand keeps that pressure constant. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 321,800 openings a year for janitors and building cleaners over the 2025 to 2035 decade—even though employment in the occupation is expected to grow just 2%.
“We spend millions optimizing how people work once they are inside the building,” says Prateek Agrawal, Head of Product at HireQuotient, which was founded in 2021 in Singapore by Smarthveer Sidana and Eugene Goh. “But we rely on archaic, manual scaffolding to decide who gets through the front door.”
An applicant tracking system is built to record the people who show up. In deskless, licensed, and high-turnover roles, many of the people an employer needs never apply, and some who do drift away before their first shift. HR.com’s State of Frontline and Volume Hiring 2026 found 61% of high-volume hirers count interview or first-shift no-shows among their top challenges, and 43% call post-offer ghosting a considerable or major problem.
Why a payroll platform wants a sourcing engine
HR tech has been moving toward the frontline for years and UKG took shape in 2020 when Ultimate Software merged with Kronos. Last year, iCIMS acquired frontline automation company Apli in September and Workday completed its acquisition of Paradox on October 1. HR Executive reports that Chipotle cut hiring time by 75% using AI built for frontline roles.
Some of that investment can improve the experience of someone who has already applied, through conversational applications, chat screening and automated scheduling. Another part of the problem sits earlier. It’s the candidate who never applies and, in regulated work, the one whose license has to be checked before anyone picks up the phone.
BambooHR owns the employer relationship through its applicant tracking and payroll products. HireQuotient supplies the sourcing layer, and the two companies say they’re exploring joint go-to-market plans.
“HireQuotient is exciting because it helps fill important gaps for frontline hiring teams,” says Paul Wiscombe, an account executive at BambooHR, “whether through candidate texting, AI calls, or proactively finding candidates who have not yet applied.”
HireQuotient says it provides personal contact information in its target industries and verifies licenses through partnerships with government repositories, checking clinicians against sources such as the National Provider Identifier registry and state licensing boards. The agreement repeats the model of HireQuotient’s integration with Paylocity in July.
The approach follows a similar pattern: the platform brings the employer relationship, and the specialist brings the vertical data.
Agents dial, recruiters decide
That raises the question of how much of the hiring process AI should handle. A Workday and DailyPay study released September 17 found half of hourly workers worry AI will replace their jobs. Views on AI inside the hiring process look more measured. A June Propeller Insights survey found only one in four people oppose AI in hiring and nearly half said knowing a human reviews final decisions would make them more comfortable.
The deployments reported so far lean the same way. HireQuotient said in August that Alliance Building Services recorded a 70% reduction in manual sourcing effort while closing 35+ regulated roles and cutting time-to-close by more than 50%. According to HireQuotient, the company’s other August announcements credit EasySource with an 80% reduction in manual recruiting effort at W3 Insurance and $60,000 in cost savings at Stern at Home Therapy. Each figure measures manual work taken off recruiters’ plates, and none involves handing a hiring decision to software.
“True architecture doesn’t replace the human experience; it protects it,” Agrawal says.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Bernd Waltermann, former Managing Director of BCG Southeast Asia, says, “Under Smarth’s leadership, the team has built a deeply impactful platform that addresses the realities of today’s labor market. 30k+ Clients in Frontline who have been using BambooHR for their payroll and do heavy financial transactions are much more likely to buy EasySource because of a genuine deep pain point and current gap in proactive frontline recruiting. Bridging this gap creates a definitive win-win for both companies and unprecedented value for the end user.”
“HireQuotient offers employers a cost effective way to pair BambooHR’s HR platform with additional recruiting capabilities,” Wiscombe says.
Agents take on the dialing, license checks, and paperwork, while recruiters and hiring managers keep the judgment calls about who joins a team. Oversight still takes work. Lighthouse Research & Advisory and iCIMS found AI reduced recruiter workload at 75% of high-volume employers, yet 41% named a greater need for oversight or validation among the friction points AI created.
Judged at Day 90
HR.com’s panel of talent acquisition experts ranked 90-day retention (63%) and manager satisfaction with new hires (57%) as the metrics that matter most. Only 27% of organizations in the survey said their recruiting data aligns with post-hire performance.
Partnerships like this one may be judged on whether frontline hires stay. Right now, fewer than a third of the organizations HR.com surveyed can connect that outcome back to how they hired.
