Why Ego Is the Enemy in the Pursuit of Success
In this video, Joel Brown of Addicted2Success talks to Ryan Holiday, the bestselling author of Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator, about his new book, Ego Is the Enemy, which takes a look at historical figures and how they conquered their own ego to avoid shameless self-promotion and achieve their highest goals.
So why is ego the enemy?
"I'm talking about ego in a more familiar sense -- when confidence becomes arrogance," Holiday says. "Ego is that line that we cross when our confidence, our assuredness, our ambition stops being a productive fuel and becomes a form of self-sabotage."
This self-sabotage creates a disconnect from reality, which makes it hard for us to do the real work that we need to do in order to be successful.
"Confidence is based on what's real -- I'm confident I can run five miles, because I ran five miles yesterday and I've been training," he continues. "Ego is -- oh of course I can run a marathon -- I'm the best there ever was!"
