From Refugee to Fashion House Founder: Albert Lukonga Builds Kentucky’s First Luxury Fashion House and Expands Nationally
LEXINGTON, Ky. While many entrepreneurs start with capital, connections, and resources, Albert Lukonga began his journey thousands of miles away in a refugee camp.
Today, Lukonga is the Founder and Executive Designer of ALBERT COUTURE, Kentucky’s first fashion house and a growing luxury brand serving executives, athletes, entertainers, government leaders, and entrepreneurs across the United States. His path from Central Africa to building a nationally recognized fashion company reflects the resilience, determination, and entrepreneurial drive at the heart of the American Dream.
Born in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lukonga spent his early years amid political instability and conflict. His family fled to neighboring Zimbabwe, where they lived as refugees before resettling in the U.S. through the United Nations. In 2006, they arrived in Lexington, Kentucky, with little more than hope for a better future.
The transition was challenging. Lukonga attended Henry Clay High School and initially planned to pursue medicine as a future cardiologist. Over time, however, his passion for design and entrepreneurship led him in a different direction.
Inspired by his mother’s background in fashion and tailoring, Lukonga developed a deep interest in clothing and personal style. He studied luxury design, garment construction, sales, customer experience, and international manufacturing while working various jobs to support himself. Along the way, he pursued an ambitious goal: building a luxury fashion house in Kentucky.
In 2018, he turned that vision into reality.
With limited resources and no outside investors, Lukonga launched ALBERT COUTURE with a focus on craftsmanship, personalized service, and timeless design. Rather than competing with traditional retailers, he created a private wardrobe experience tailored to each client.
The company started small but quickly earned a reputation for exceptional service and attention to detail. Clients valued not only the garments but also the guidance and expertise behind every appointment. Lukonga recognized that many successful professionals wanted more than clothing — they wanted confidence, direction, and a trusted advisor who understood the role personal style plays in success.
As demand increased, ALBERT COUTURE expanded beyond Kentucky and began serving clients nationwide. Today, the company works with leaders in business, sports, entertainment, and government, offering custom garments, bespoke footwear, luxury outerwear, and private wardrobe consulting.
The brand’s growth has been driven by relationship-building, customer experience, and a steadfast commitment to quality. Instead of relying heavily on traditional advertising, ALBERT COUTURE has expanded through referrals, reputation, and long-term client relationships.
“Luxury is ultimately about trust,” Lukonga said. “People are not simply purchasing clothing. They’re investing in how they present themselves to the world. That requires a level of service, consistency, and care that cannot be outsourced.”
ALBERT COUTURE’s success is especially notable because of its location. While many luxury brands emerge from fashion capitals such as New York, Paris, Milan, or Los Angeles, Lukonga chose Lexington, Kentucky. His success challenges assumptions about where luxury brands can thrive and demonstrates that innovation can emerge from any market.
Today, ALBERT COUTURE continues to expand its national presence, serving clients in major markets including New York City, Washington D.C., Florida, Texas, Arizona, and beyond. The company has also expanded into comprehensive wardrobe planning and luxury lifestyle services, creating a broader client experience.
Looking ahead, Lukonga’s ambitions extend beyond fashion. He aims to establish ALBERT COUTURE as one of America’s premier luxury brands while creating opportunities for future generations of entrepreneurs and creatives.
“Success is not just about what you build for yourself,” Lukonga said. “It’s about creating opportunities for others and proving that where you start in life does not determine where you finish.”
On August 1, 2026, ALBERT COUTURE will present its Fall 2026 Collection at The Vine Members Club in Lexington, Kentucky. The event will bring together clients, business leaders, community supporters, and fashion enthusiasts to celebrate entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, and innovation.
As the company enters its next phase of growth, ALBERT COUTURE remains committed to the principles that shaped its founding: excellence, perseverance, service, and the belief that vision paired with hard work can produce extraordinary results.
