When Barbara Corcoran was in the early days of building what would become a multimillion-dollar real-estate firm, a woman came in to interview for a sales job.

Her name was Esther Kaplan and, as Corcoran tells it, she was completely wrong for the position. She was too buttoned-up, too careful. She was so organized that her purse had partitions.

But she was completely right for a different job -- one as Corcoran’s business partner.

“I saw in that purse the opposite of me,” the free-wheeling Shark Tank investor said at Entrepreneur’s Growth Conference in February. “What Esther provided for me was the opposite side of my personality that I didn’t have.”

Kaplan became Corcoran’s equity partner and served as president of the firm for the next three decades.

Today, Corcoran continues to look for that same yin-yang leadership dynamic in her startup investments. In fact, just knowing that a company has two founders -- each with their own personality and unique set of experiences -- is enough to get her excited.

“Of all the businesses I’ve heard on Shark Tank, the most successful ones are the ones that are owned by two people.”
