Facebook wants to become much more than a social media network. Founder Mark Zuckerberg announced this week that the company is building a satellite to improve Internet access for parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The move is part of Facebook's initiative with Internet.org to bring free web services to people in remote regions.

Amazon is taking on Etsy. The e-commerce giant founded by Jeff Bezos announced the launch of Handmade, a platform focused on selling handmade, factory-free goods.

Alibaba founder Jack Ma's debut painting raked in $5.4 million from a Sotheby's auction this week, 21 times higher than its expected price. The proceeds from the Chinese billionaire's art piece will support an environmental nonprofit.

And Taylor Swift is topped Instagram with 49.7 million followers and growing. The photo-sharing platform announced that the 25-year old pop singer has the most followed account on Instagram, trumping social media powerhouses like Kim Kardashian and Beyonce, who have 48.3 million and 47.4 million followers, respectively.
