Author Robert Greene grew up being fascinated by history and read every book he could find on the subject. Years later, he would write one of the most famous books on historical leaders of its time -- The 48 Laws of Power.

Released in 1998, the book is now almost required reading for anyone in the hip-hop or Hollywood elite and is still one of the most requested in prison populations. In it, Greene outlines the laws of power -- "Law 1: Never Outshine the Master," "Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions," "Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally," etc. -- using the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz and many other great thinkers.

Greene, 56, has since released four more international bestsellers all on the themes of strategy, power and seduction: The Art of Seduction (2001), 33 Strategies of War (2007), The 50th Law (2009) and Mastery (2012). In this hour-long interview with Entrepreneur Network partner Patrick Bet-David of Valuetainment, Green talks about his life before and after the breakthrough book and the importance of knowing your life task early on.

"There's no real rational explanation why people are attracted to something," he says. "I can't give you a rational reason why I was drawn to books and literature... There was just something within me that was drawn to history. Each person tends to have a dominant form of intelligence that they're good at -- and the key in life is being aware of what makes you different, what you're naturally drawn to."
