Key Takeaways

  • O’Leary will not hire candidates who have poor internet connections.
  • In an interview clip posted to Instagram, O’Leary said that bad Wi-Fi means that “you’re not serious about business.”
  • Another one of his hiring red flags is holding down multiple jobs over the past two years.

Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary will toss your resume into the garbage instantly if he spots one of these hiring red flags.

In an interview clip posted to Instagram earlier this week, O’Leary revealed that he won’t hire candidates who have bad Wi-Fi

“For me, it says a lot about you when you don’t have a good internet connection,” O’Leary said. “You’re not in business, you don’t want to be in business, you don’t care. And so I’ll probably put your resume in the garbage.”

That means that if your audio glitches or your video freezes during the interview, O’Leary will take it as a sign that “you’re not serious about business” and throw out your resume.

“In a hybrid world, your internet connection tells me everything,” he wrote in his Instagram post caption.

O’Leary also has another hiring red flag: candidates holding multiple positions over the past two years and frequently job-hopping. He places the resumes of candidates that are “bouncing all over the place” into the garbage.

“Companies don’t like it because they invest in you,” he told CNBC in 2021. “If you’re going to leave them after a few months, that’s a total waste of money for them.”

He emphasized that when candidates apply for a new job, they should have a mental commitment to stay there for at least two years. This rule applies regardless of whether they like the job or not. Companies view someone who leaves a job in under 24 months as a poor investment, O’Leary said.

A 2018 analysis from job site TalentWorks backs up O’Leary’s view. It reviewed nearly 7,000 applications across U.S. industries and found that candidates who spent less than 15 months in their previous role were 43% less likely to be hired for a new job.

The report found that a short tenure at your most recent job has the equivalent effect of erasing nearly five years of employment experience from your resume. TalentWorks notes that hiring managers typically scan resumes for less than a minute. They rarely pause to consider nuanced reasons for a candidate’s departure from a previous role.

Interestingly, O’Leary is not looking for nonstop workaholics. He instead prefers well-rounded people who execute at a high level.

In a fall interview with Fox Business, O’Leary said that his employees who perform at a high level and display “executional excellence” often have “eclectic” backgrounds and interests. Their hobbies include dancing, painting or riding motorcycles.

“I love it when I find someone who is keeping up a talent that they had when they were teenagers,” he said. He gave the example of a woman on his team in her 40s who still danced ballet

“[It’s] really hard to do,” he told Fox Business. “She is remarkable.”
